UNEP POLLUTION SURVEY - CH.6

Atlantis has been the subject of countless films, as has Nazi gold and oil polluting our oceans, but never have all these elements come together under one roof as a submarine movie. Aiming for a screenplay 90-110 pages max.

NORTH SEA CONSIDERED A HIGH POLLUTION RISK TO WILDLIFE

The UNEP, United Nations Environment Programme have been following the events in the North Sea with disbelief. On the one hand secretly applauding the daredevil antics of the Terramentals. On the other, aghast at the potential harm that oil pollution from such a large scale spill may represent to fisheries and other biodiversity, as may circulate and accumulate in the Arctic. They seek to prevent a wildlife catastrophe on top of the energy displacement issue, however temporary the energy issue, protection of the polar regions is of paramount importance.

Above the restless tides of the Bay of Biscay, the Elizabeth Swann cruised eastward with measured grace. The hull thrummed with purpose—solar wings unfurled, hydrogen fuel cells whispering beneath polished carbon strakes. On deck, the crew bathed in golden light filtered through high clouds, each of them sensing that their interlude of peace was drawing to a close.

Within the bridge, HAL’s voice cut through the air, crisp and neutral as ever.

“Incoming transmission. Encrypted frequency. Source: Newcastle University, relayed via UNEP, Paris. Priority designation—Urgent Humanitarian.”

John leaned over from the navigation table and raised an eyebrow. “Let’s have it, Hal.”

A chime pulsed through the main console. Then a familiar voice, soft-edged with Northern warmth, filtered through.

“Roberta Treadstone calling the
Elizabeth Swan. Come in, Swann. Over.”

Dan grinned across the control bay, swivelling in his chair. “She’s got a good radio voice.”

Cleopatra, seated nearby with a cup of mint tea, smirked but said nothing. She knew this tone from John—a mix of nostalgia and mischief. He straightened, touched the comms button.

“Swann to
Dr Treadstone. How are you, Roberta? Over.”

There was a pause, then a sigh.

“Desperately in need of your services again, John.”

John flushed slightly, catching Cleopatra’s arching brow. He held up a hand to her, palm out, as if to say easy now. Cleopatra’s narrowed eyes danced, amused but mockingly suspicious.

“I’d hazard a guess,” he replied, tone casual. “Would it involve an increasingly unstable body of water to our northeast... and a somewhat misplaced nuclear submarine? Over.”

“Spot on as usual,” Roberta replied, voice tighter now. “
Professor Daccord wanted to make this official, but he knows how UNEP works—layers of diplomacy. So I’m jumping the stack. The North Sea, John. It’s bleeding. And the Arctic gyres are hungry.”

Behind him, Dan muttered, “Oil and currents—never a good cocktail.”

John nodded slowly. “You’ll want the full suite? Deep-structure sonar sweeps, ROV mapping, radiation sampling?”

“The full Monty, yes. And fast.”

“We’re rounding the
Pillars of Hercules now,” John replied. “Give us thirty hours. We’ll swing north through the Channel and begin our descent into the basin. Tell Jacques I’ll send him the first grid lines before we reach Dogger Bank.”

“You’re a star, John.” A pause. “And Trish is a lucky woman.”

The mic clicked off. Cleopatra folded her arms, mock glare sharp enough to cut steel.

“Oh, am I now?” she said dryly.

John grinned and reached for her hand. “Luckier than you know.”

Dan coughed pointedly. “Get a room, lovebirds.”

“Preferably one I don’t have to navigate around,” added HAL.

The mood lifted briefly, but even in the banter, a quiet unease settled among the crew. They all knew what the news networks didn’t yet dare say aloud: the North Sea was in chemical collapse, and the Terramentals’ dramatic warning had been more prescient than theatrical.

Later that night, the Swann glided silently past the mouth of the
English Channel, her lights dimmed, hull cloaked in counter-illumination. On sonar, Hal marked the unmistakable blip of a Royal Navy Astute-class sub—HMS Neptune—sliding westward under minimal power.

“Skipper,” came Hal’s voice, quieter now, “we’ve just passed the Neptune. No acoustic challenge. They're running passive. I’m also detecting trace levels of radioactive contamination—gamma signatures just above normal background.”

John narrowed his eyes at the screen. The wake path trailed away toward the Atlantic, slow and heavy like a wounded whale.

“Direction?”

“Bearing northwest toward the continental shelf. Coastal drift suggests possible ingress toward Great Yarmouth. But…” Hal hesitated.

“But currents are scrambled.”

“Exactly. Counterwinds off Dogger Bank. Anything oil-based is dispersing erratically. Makes analysis... cloudy.”

John folded his arms. “We’ll untangle the currents. We’ve done worse.”

He turned to
Cleopatra. “Wake the mapping suite. We start grid scans at dawn.”

She nodded without hesitation. “Rigs first?”

“And rigs last,”
John said. “No one else seems interested in accountability—but we’ll make the seabed speak.”

For some time the Elizabeth Swann has been held in high esteem, with John Storm more than willing to go that extra mile, to survey the underwater city of Alexandria in the Mediterranean, and Port Royal in the Caribbean, in collaboration with Blue Shield. Thus the UN has on record, the amazing abilities of the subsea instrumentation array, that produces such incredibly detailed data sets.

The UN's Environment Programme ask John Storm to survey the North Sea for concentrations and flow pattern of oil pollution. The Elizabeth Swann passes the SSN, HMS Neptune as they negotiate the Straits of Dover. Hal picks up traces of radiation contamination on a course for Great Yarmouth.

Disillusioned eco activists are imprisoned by the British, for peacefully protesting in London about unrealistically low fines for oil spills in the North Sea, demonstrating strictly in accordance with their Article 9 and 10 Human Rights. They are targeted by fossil fuel industry fraudsters, who bribe police officials and court judges to secure a conviction, with the backing of corrupt ministers of state who have undeclared personal investments in oil drilling companies: Amoco, BP, Shell, Total. That sets in motion a train of events, where, having been framed, the ever more determined environmentalists build a mini-sub, fast enough and especially equipped, to sink or capture Astute, Aukus and US Seawolf class submarines. Having captured HMS Neptune, the Terramentals torpedo a BP owned rig, also destroying two others (Shell), with the looming threat to target all 150 plus, operating in the North Sea. The oil producers are temporarily forced to shut down production, as a result of the significant media coverage and public outrage on realization of the pollution. The UN asks John Storm to provide a geodata survey on the environmental damage.
