U-BOAT 986 - CH.10

Atlantis has been the subject of countless films, as has Nazi gold and oil polluting our oceans, but never have all these elements come together under one roof as a submarine movie. Aiming for a screenplay 90-110 pages max.

<<<< CHAPTER 9 - CHANGE OF COURSE

HIGH SPEED NORTH ATLANTIC CHASE HUGGING COAST OF NORTH AFRICA, MOROCCO

THE GHOST OF WADJ UR

Redan Simdo knew every German U-Boat that went into the Wadj Ur, in the Second World War was lost, around sixty of them. Passing through the Pillars of Hercules, would be a one way trip.

The HMS Neptune hugged the African continental shelf like a shark shadow—silent, swift, and hard to trace beneath the thermal layers off Morocco’s coast. Redan Simdo stood at the sonar console, arms folded, eyes narrowed at the trailing swirl of sediment dancing behind them.

They had skirted past Gibraltar under cloak and current, but Simdo had made the call not to press into the Mediterranean
.

Too narrow. Too historical.

“Sixty U-boats went in through Wadj Ur during the war,” he muttered to himself, recalling the strange black hole of wartime loss. “None came back.”

Statistically speaking, it was a one-way ticket to the bottom. And with a possibly leaking reactor, neither he nor his crew were in the mood for enclosed waters and unpredictable currents.

Instead, they tracked south—shadowing the jagged outline of the Atlas Mountains, Casablanca slipping off their starboard flank like a ghost of colonial intrigue, then veering toward the Saharan coast and the dusky mirage of Puerto del Carmen.

Red hadn’t made up his mind entirely about Storm’s radiation warning, but part of him—the part that had survived deserts, riots, and double-crosses—sensed the man wasn’t lying.

Still, the crew grumbled.

“Why’s it just this Storm bloke chasing us?” Bo Dallas muttered, flicking switches like he was tuning into a different reality.

“Feels wrong,” said Zinzi Diana. “If we were leaking—wouldn’t half the world’s navies be up our tail?”

“They don’t know,” Zera whispered. “Only one ship’s fast enough to notice.”

BACK ON THE ELIZABETH SWANN

“They’ve changed course again,” Dan said, squinting at the tracking plot. “Now they're dancing too close to the coast. Shallower waters ahead.”

John Storm leaned over the rail, eyes scanning the digital bathymetric overlay with a grim frown.

“Hal, what do we know about the seabed near here?”

“Very little, Captain. Cartography sparse. Topography inconsistent. Potential for wreckage fields, volcanic ridges, and sudden shoals. We are, in short, surfing in the dark.”

“So we have... nothing.”

“Nothing useful, Skip,” Hal replied evenly. “Except I am, of course, mapping the unknown as we proceed—per millisecond.”

“Keep swinging the lead,” John muttered, half to himself.

The Swann zigzagged through waters no sane merchant vessel would touch, dancing through sonar shadows and thermal ghosts in pursuit of a sub hiding in a fracture line of history.

Then came the ping.

Hal’s voice cut in like a scalpel.

“Captain. Side-scan sonar returning high-magnetism anomaly. Subsurface. Unusual profile.”

Dan's fingers flew across the console. “It’s too small to be Neptune.”

“And... oddly familiar,” Hal added. “Curved hull. Pressure-resistant rivets. Conning tower intact but deformed. Length suggests approximately 67 metres. Markings... faint.”

“Let’s see it,” John said, eyes narrowing.

As the image sharpened on screen, his breath caught.

“Oh no,” he muttered. “Not again. Not another historic wreck. This is becoming a habit.”

Dan whistled, low and reverent. “Holy fuel cells, Skip. That’s a bloody U-Boat. World War Two, no question. Can we stop and take a look? I mean—imagine what’s down there. Codebooks. Enigma machines. Skeletons.”

“Yes, Dan,” John said dryly. “That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“Mark it?” asked Hal.

John gave a nod.

“Plot it. Secure the scan. We’ll come back. History doesn’t bleed into the present... unless you let it.”

The Swann surged forward once more, leaving the slumbering corpse of U-986 behind—another ghost in the shallows.

Ahead, Neptune cut deeper into the blue. Time was running out.

Red was torn, while not firmly believing John Storm's warning as to radiation leaks, he had a hunch that the famous conservationist might be trying to help. They pushed on past the Atlas mountains, past Casablanca navigating towards the Sahara Desert and Puerto Del Carmen, the crew began to change their minds, until they all began to question why it was that just John Storm and the Elizabeth Swann were giving chase.

CHAPTER 10 - U-BOAT 986 >>>>

In trying to evade the Swann, the SSN Neptune navigates an uncharted course, way off the normal transport lanes. In hot pursuit, the Swann's instruments pick up magnetic signature of U-Boat 986 with side scan sonar, lodged in irregular rock formation between the Canary Islands and African coast.

Disillusioned eco activists are imprisoned by the British, for peacefully protesting in London about unrealistically low fines for oil spills in the North Sea, demonstrating strictly in accordance with their Article 9 and 10 Human Rights. They are targeted by fossil fuel industry fraudsters, who bribe police officials and court judges to secure a conviction, with the backing of corrupt ministers of state who have undeclared personal investments in oil drilling companies: Amoco, BP, Shell, Total. That sets in motion a train of events, where, having been framed, the ever more determined environmentalists build a mini-sub, fast enough and especially equipped, to sink or capture Astute, Aukus and US Seawolf class submarines. Having captured HMS Neptune, the Terramentals torpedo a BP owned rig, also destroying two others (Shell), with the looming threat to target all 150 plus, operating in the North Sea. The oil producers are temporarily forced to shut down production, as a result of the significant media coverage and public outrage on realization of the pollution. The UN asks John Storm to provide a geodata survey on the environmental damage.
